Most homes built before the mid-1980s were wired with much smaller electrical loads in mind. Some still run on rubber-insulated cabling or early TPS wiring that has hardened and become brittle over decades of heat in the roof cavity. When we open a switchboard in a home from this era, we can usually tell the cable’s condition just by how it flexes in the hand. Insulation breakdown is the silent risk here. You will not see it, but it can quietly raise the chance of arcing, short circuits, and electrical fire.

A home that is 40 years or older has almost certainly outlived the safe service life of at least some of its wiring. Even if everything appears to work, that is not the same as everything being safe.
